If you want to learn something about this sport in order to enjoy it, here are 10 things you should know about it:
- Court
The areas surrounding the goal are called the small area and it measures 5.5 meters wide and 7.32 meters long, in this place is the point where penalties can be shot.
- Duration
The duration of the match is 90 minutes of effective play, which is divided into two 45-minute halves, with an interval of 15 minutes. If necessary, the central referee has the power to add extra minutes if necessary.
In special cases, a 30-minute extension can be played, divided into two periods of 15 minutes each.
- The ball
Soccer is played with a ball with a spherical shape, made of leather or some similar material, which is waterproof since if it absorbs water it can change its weight and size.
The official size for the balls must be between 68 and 70 centimeters, and weigh between 410 and 450 grams.
As a curious fact, the black and white ball, which is the most recognized worldwide, emerged in the 1970 World Cup in Mexico and was named as Adidas Telstar.
- The teams
The International Federation of Associated Football (FIFA) , the international body that regulates this sport, indicates that it is played with 2 teams of a maximum of 11 players and a minimum of 7.
Each team has 10 players on the 'court' and a goalkeeper. During the 90 minutes of play, up to 3 changes are allowed per team.
It should be noted that at the end of the first half the teams change their goal.
- The referees
The referee is in charge of enforcing the rules of the game, in football there are 4 referees, who are divided as follows:
●Central Referee: responsible for applying the rules, he is the only one with the power to caution and send off players.
●Assistant referee: these are two referees who are outside the field of play and assist the central defender in setting the rules.
●Fourth referee: he may substitute one of the previous referees, in case of injury, in addition to helping the referee in his duties.
In recent years a few more referees have been introduced, this to support the review of questionable plays.
- The game
The main objective of football is to score a goal in the goal of the opposing team, whoever scores the most goals during the 90 minutes of play will be the winner of the match.
A goal is scored when the ball has completely passed the goal line between the goalpost and the goalpost.
Scores are valid when scoring with the feet, as players (with the exception of the goalkeeper, and as long as they are in the small or large area) are prohibited from touching the ball intentionally with the hands.
The matches can be tied, unless they are tournaments where a final pass is played, in this case the game is added extra time, if even after 30 minutes the teams are still tied, the winner is decided on penalties.
- Faults
The fouls that a player may incur are varied, here are some of them:
●Give or try to kick an opponent.
●Trigger an opponent, that is, make him fall or try.
●Jump on an opponent.
●Charging violently or dangerously to an opponent.
●Holding or pushing an opponent.
●Playing the ball, that is, carrying it, hitting it or throwing it with the hand or arm (does not apply to the goalkeeper)
Depending on the severity of the offense, the punishment is imposed, which can range from a warning to an expulsion from the game.
- Cards
There are two types of cards, yellow and red, and each can be drawn on different occasions.
The yellow card is to indicate to a player that he has been cautioned, in this case the player can continue playing, but if he continues with some unsportsmanlike conduct, a second yellow card can be obtained, which means an expulsion.
For his part, the red card is the greatest punishment in football, since it indicates that a player has been expelled from the field of play and cannot be replaced by anyone else. The referee may draw a direct red card and by the succession of two yellow cards.
- Cancellation of goal, penalty and other things you should know
A goal can be annulled when the player who scored the goal was out of place, the out of place is marked when a player is closer to the opposite goal line than the ball and the penultimate opponent.
The penalty is shot 11 meters from the goal, this is when a violent infraction or an intentional hand is committed inside the small area.
Throw-in is a way of restarting the game when the ball has gone out from the sides of the court, this is the only occasion that a court player can take the ball with his hands.
It is a corner kick when the ball leaves the field on any of the goal lines after being touched by a player of the defending team.
